The Department of Transportation (DOT) is cracking down on airlines that keep passengers trapped on the tarmac for extended periods. Penalties for non-compliance have been increased, with a requirement for domestic flights to return to the gate after 3 hours and international flights after 4 hours. American Airlines has been hit with a record-breaking $2.05 million fine for failing to adhere to these regulations on 43 flights from 2018 to 2021.
They did, however, compensate passengers on these and other delayed flights, resulting in the waiving of an additional $2.05 million fine.
